Mission of the Center for Meso-Bio Single-Molecule Imaging (CeMI)

The CeMI was established on March 3, 2009, as the iCeMS' imaging innovation center for cellular meso-sciences. The primary mission of the CeMI is to promote cellular meso-sciences through imaging technologies.

Examples have recently been accumulating, showing that meso-scale molecular complexes with sizes between 3 and 300 nm (including the iCeMS' focal scale of 5-100 nm), mostly comprising three to ~1000 molecules, play essential roles in cellular functions. These molecular complexes utilize thermal fluctuations and diffusion for their assembly and function, as well as their disassembly. At the CeMI, we are striving to image the movements and interactions of individual single molecules of interest with each other within living cells, as in viewing a theatrical pageant. This would greatly advance our understanding of the mechanisms by which meso-scale molecular complexes form and function.

The CeMI has two objectives. The first objective is to develop technologies for imaging and manipulating single molecules for revealing their locations, movements, and interactions in living cells, to understand the mechanisms for the formation and function of meso-scale molecular complexes in living cells.

The second objective is to facilitate collaborative research with scientists from around the world. The collaborative projects could include developing the technologies further, bringing/adapting various interesting research paradigms for observation by the new imaging tools developed here, and revealing the mechanisms for the formation and function of meso-scale molecular complexes.
Through these two activities, we hope to promote the field of cellular meso-sciences.

The CeMI places special emphasis on single-molecule imaging and tracking, and on terahertz spectroscopy and microscopy.
